AFC Telford's Daniel Udoh would sacrifice goals for a victory
Top goalscorer Daniel Udoh admits he would accept a barren run as long as AFC Telford United return to winning ways.
The Bucks’ confidence has been given a jolt following back-to-back defeats.
Udoh is the only player to have scored in the last three games for Gavin Cowan’s charges and is now on 11 strikes for the season.
But he insists the team’s targets will always be more important than him reaching his personal goals.
“I’d rather other people score the goals and us win rather than me scoring and us losing,” said the 22-year-old. “Whether I score or not doesn’t really matter to be honest with you.
“If I score five but we lose 6-5 then, of course, I’m not going to be satisfied.
“As a striker, I’m always looking to score goals and I have targets that I want to reach.
“But the main thing is the team, making sure we get those wins and are where we want to be.”
Telford have won just one of their last five games.
The victory was a 3-1 triumph over Bedford Town in the FA Cup second qualifying round, in which Udoh scored a stunning hat-trick.
He got the goal in their 2-1 third qualifying round loss at Warrington Town at the weekend as well.
Udoh is sure the Bucks will soon return to the form they showed throughout August and early September – an eight-match unbeaten which turned a lot of heads.
But they are set for a test against National North leaders Chorley at the New Bucks Head on Saturday.
“I think this period will show how strong we really are,” said Udoh.
“It’s all about bouncing back from it, coming back stronger.
“We know what we’re good at and we know we’re capable of picking up results – we’ve done it.
“It’s just about getting back to the basics.
“The manager gives us clear direction, we know our jobs, and it’s about focusing on those jobs to make sure we get the results that we want.
“It’s down to us to put in 110 per cent each and every time we’re out there as that’s what the staff and the supporters deserve.”
Udoh joined Telford in the summer after being released by League Two side Crewe Alexandra.
He has also played for Ilkeston, Solihull Moors, Chester, Halesowen Town and Leamington, who he scored for against the Bucks last campaign.
With seven league goals, Udoh is the joint leading scorer in National League North.
