Gavin Cowan proud over AFC Telford youngsters' run
AFC Telford United boss Gavin Cowan has expressed his pride over the achievements of the club’s youngsters in the FA Youth Cup.
The young Bucks are heading to Glanford Park to take on Scunthorpe United in the competition’s first round tonight (kick-off 7pm).
To get there, the group of under-18s – managed by Declan Allen – have beaten Boldmere St Michaels, Evesham United, Stourbridge and Rugby Town.
Jack Downing got both goals in the 2-1 victory against Rugby in the last round.
“I’m so pleased with the youth team, and so proud of them,” said Cowan.
“We’ve got two or three of them training with the first team now, to give them that experience and show them what it’s all about. It’s fantastic for the football club, having young lads from the area doing so well.”
It is the furthest the Bucks have gone in the Cup since the club’s reformation in 2004. They also reached the proper rounds back in the 70s. Jack Downing got both goals in the 2-1 victory against Rugby in the last round.
Downing is dual registered with Telford and Stourport Swifts and has been featuring for the latter in the Midland Premier, as well as Allen’s charges.
He has chipped in with seven goals in 14 appearances for Stourport.
