AFC Telford keen to keep hold of Brendon Daniels

Boss Gavin Cowan is keen to continue his 'love-love, love-hate relationship' with set-piece specialist Brendon Daniels by keeping him at AFC Telford United permanently.

Daniels wowed supporters with a stunning free-kick in the 3-1 Boxing Day victory against Nuneaton Borough.

His loan from Port Vale expires in the new year but his contract with the Valiants, where he has not played, also ends next month, so there is scope to sign the 25-year-old.

And when asked if he will pursue a deal, Cowan said: "I think so.

"We've got two games until then so we'll get them out of the way and sit down with him.

"We have other options, absolutely, but if he's going to do what he's done (on Boxing Day), then, of course, we want to try to keep hold of that."

Cowan feels Daniels, who will be hoping to start against Leamington tomorrow, is an example of a player being in non-league despite having the ability to play much higher.

If he does carry on his New Bucks Head stay, the Bucks chief wants to see more consistency from him – to help Telford's cause in National League North and, in turn, go further towards fulfilling his potential.

"There's a lot of players that play at this level that are probably of League One or Championship quality, but they just don't do it on a regular occasion," said Cowan.

"I think I've got a good understanding with Brendon.

"We have a little bit of a love-love, love-hate relationship. But it's a good one.

"We have an understanding and I'm really warming to him.

"I think he's a good lad. I think he might have been a bit misunderstood in the past, so he needs an opportunity and needs guiding.

"I think I could be the person to do that. I've given him a chance and he's gone and rewarded me."

Winger Daniels has previously shone for Harrogate, Fylde and Alfreton in non-league.

"All he's got to do is find a bit of consistency," added Cowan.

"If he plays a part against Leamington, he's got to go and do it against them.

"Then he's got to do it at Nuneaton (on New Year's Day). It's important, isn't it?

"He's got to come good on a regular occasion.

"When you see him (on Boxing Day), he's almost unplayable."
