AFC Telford United in Andy Wycherley boost for FA Trophy tie

The keeper is still to be officially given the all-clear by doctors from the eye injury he suffered at Boston almost a fortnight ago, but boss Gavin Cowan does not envisage a problem.

Telford-born Wycherley has been resting in a bid to make the semi-final first leg at Brisbane Road. The Bucks’ other goalkeeper, Stoke loanee Josef Bursik, is cup-tied and Cowan admitted to having a look at ‘contingency plans’.

But the former TNS shot-stopper’s availability will be a boost for Cowan’s entire Telford team, said the boss.

“It’s huge for him,” Cowan said of the 20-year-old. “It’s important we keep continuity, he’s still learning his trade and developing and this will be a big part of it. The players know his attributes and have a relationship with him. It’s important we’ve got him available.

“We’d have Shez (Sheridan Martinez) on board as an option and a couple of contingencies but luckily we don’t need to call on them.”

Telford set off for London this morning and will train and complete their pre-match analysis on the National League leaders at Premier League Watford’s training ground in London Colney. The National League North Bucks have come through training in Shropshire this week without any other injury scares going into the huge Trophy first-leg clash.

“We’ll travel early and train at Watford before doing our analysis on them,” added Cowan.
