Matt Stenson: AFC Telford can go on big run
Matty Stenson insists AFC Telford have the mentality to believe they will embark on a huge run of results to reach the National League North play-offs.
The Solihull Moors loanee is ready to lead the line for Gavin Cowan’s men against lowly Blyth Spartans tomorrow having extended his Bucks stint until the end of the season.
He firmly believes that Telford must strive to achieve their top-seven goal. Cowan’s side are seven places and seven points from that mark, but the frontman knows everything is still to play for.
“There are 17 league games left,” Stenson said. “Who says we can’t win all 17 and get in the play-offs?
“If we’ve not got that attitude about us then it’s never going to happen.
“Without doubt we know we’ve got great players and a togetherness to get there. Everyone has high expectations of themselves here, including the fans, they want that.”
Blyth, however, are on a better run of form than their position in the table – 21st and second-bottom – suggests.
Boss Lee Clark has struggled to put together a consistent run of results this season but the Green Army have beaten Curzon Ashton, Kidderminster Harriers and Gateshead in their last six games.
And Telford fans will well remember the trip to Croft Park in late September, when the hosts earned a 3-1 victory, their first league win of the season.
The Bucks have lost two on the spin against promotion contenders Brackley and York but put in battling displays.
Former Barwell and Leamington striker Stenson, 25, added: “My first game was York (first time round) and we drew 1-1 before beating Guiseley.
“If you look at games against the big teams we’ve matched them.
“It goes to show we’ve got the team to be up there, but it’s believing that we’re good enough.
“You can’t take any team for granted in our league, but if we play as we have against Brackley and York and go into the Blyth game thinking we’re going to win it then we’ll do well.”
