Jack Grealish calf injury to be assessed by Aston Villa
Jack Grealish will undergo further assessment early next week after the Villa skipper suffered a calf injury in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.
Grealish was withdrawn from the action after picking up the knock late on and later left the Etihad Stadium on crutches.
Though the initial indications from Villa are that the issue is not too serious, the 24-year-old will be assessed further on Monday.
At the very least, Grealish is considered a doubt for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie with Wolves, though there is a good chance he would not have started that match anyway.
Grealish was taken off with Villa already trailing 3-0 and boss Dean Smith explained: “I wanted to get him off before that. He was on a caution and it was the last 10 minutes.
“He's just got a whack off the calf so it's too early to see. We'll see on Monday.”
England boss Gareth Southgate was present at the Etihad to watch Grealish in action. Despite a disappointing result for the team, Smith felt his skipper could be relatively pleased with his own performance.
“He showed some really good bits of play, defensively as well as offensively,” said Smith.
“He probably got frustrated going 2-0 down like a few of them did.
“But the hardest part of the game is emotional control. For five minutes or so he wanted to get on the ball too much but, all in all, it was a decent performance from him.”
