Emi Martinez

Difficult to grade the performance of a goalkeeper who wasn’t forced into any serious work all afternoon. But in tough conditions his handling was excellent.

Assured 7

Ezri Konsa

Back at right-back for the first time in nearly a month. Important block from Archer in the first half and got forward well after the break.

Decent 7

Diego Carlos

Recalled to the starting line-up for the first time since Juventus and delivered a solid display, albeit against rather limp opposition.

Solid 7

Pau Torres

Back in the team after sitting out the Brentford win. Looked confident on the ball and dealt with anything thrown his way with relative ease.

Encouraging 7

Ian Maatsen

Got forward well in the first half and was a useful outlet on the left. His pace got Villa out of trouble a few times.

Quick 6

Boubacar Kamara

It was impossible to keep count of the times he stepped in to win possession. Blocked from Archer in the second half and generally controlled the game.

Dominant 8

Youri Tielemans

Some really nice touches at times but on other occasions he was sloppy, though admittedly the conditions did not help.

Mixed 6

Leon Bailey

Hit and miss for the hour he was on the pitch. Threatened at times with his pace but struggled to deliver the final ball. Injured.

Frustration 6

John McGinn

Villa’s most impressive player apart from Kamara. Got stuck in to an opponent with a soft underbelly. Should really have scored.

Imposing 7

Morgan Rogers

Threatened to take the game by the scruff of the neck several times when he drove at the visiting defence but he will be annoyed at the lack of end product.

Finish 7

Jhon Duran

Scored the only goal of the game and earned Villa a win almost from nowhere. Looks a far more refined player than the enigma of last season.

Difference 7

Substitutes

Ollie Watkins 6 (for Duran, 59), Lucas Digne 7 (for Maatsen, 59), Ross Barkley 6 (for Tielemans, 59), Jaden Philogene 5 (for Bailey, 59) Subs not used: Bogarde, Mings, Cash, Buendia, Olsen (gk).
