Potter faced the press for the first time on Thursday morning after being confirmed as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement at the London Stadium.

Solihull-born Potter, who supported Villa as a youngster, now faces them in his first match back in management when the Hammers head to the West Midlands for Friday night’s FA Cup third round tie.

He said: "I'm very excited, it's a very proud day, to be head coach of this amazing club, big tradition, big history, big expectations, big challenge.

“I'm excited, it's like Christmas for adults! It didn’t have the best of sleeps last night because of the excitement. I'm looking forward to meeting the players, fans and getting going."

Potter’s appointment concluded a messy few days for the Hammers, who axed former Wolves boss Lopetegui after just seven months in charge.

The Spaniard was effectively left as a lame duck after the club’s discussions with Potter became public.

Potter had been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023, his final match being a 2-0 home defeat to Villa.

He had since been linked with a host of other jobs, including Wolves, before finally ending his exile.

"I apologise that my name has been linked (with lots of clubs), everybody is sick of it,” he said.

"I'm here now, very happy and proud and privileged to be in this position. I hope I can do a good job and the supporters are positive towards me. So far the support has been great, the words of encouragement have been touching."

"It's been 20 months, a good break. I've had conversations with different directors, owners, but it think it was important I chose the right option at the right time. When I spoke to this club it felt right. I think it's a good fit."
