Wem Town eye push to safety

Wem Town picked up an important win against county rivals Shawbury United – and boss Josh Gough says such a victory has been a long time coming.

Wem prevailed 4-2 in the West Midlands Premier clash, with Matt Cohen at the double and Jim Astley and Dylan Hillier each scoring before Shawbury’s late double.

The result leaves Gough’s charges 17th out of the 20 teams in the division, and he hopes the display can spark a push towards mid-table comfort.

“It’s been long overdue. The performances for the last month or so have been good,” says Gough.

“We were playing some of the better teams and not seeing it out in the right moments but, on Saturday, it all came together. Barring the last 20 minutes where we let them back in it, it was a very good performance.

“Matt, from centre-half, is always a threat in the air and he got us two – one being a penalty.”

Wem’s next game is at bottom-of-the-table Pegasus Juniors.

“This is a big month for us as we’re playing a lot of teams around us in the table,” added Gough.

“If we can have a good January and pick up a few more wins, we can push towards mid-table, that safety is what we want.”
