Shrews' Springthorpe in 'dream' Everton move

Shrewsbury Town teenager Mason Springthorpe today spoke about his "dream move" to Barclays Premier League giants Everton that will net the club a big six-figure fee.

The 16-year-old youth teamer is joining the Academy squad at Goodison Park in a deal believed to be worth an initial £125,000 - though it is understood there are add-ons which could lift the final price tag far higher.

The Meole Brace School pupil is following in the footsteps of two former Town youth keepers who got their big break - with Glyn Thompson going to Fulham in October 1999 and current England No 1 Joe Hart joining Manchester City in May 2006.

"It's an absolute dream for me," said Springthorpe. "All the time I've been growing up I've wanted to be a footballer.

"It's a big step up but a big chance for me, too. I've achieved a lot at Shrewsbury and want to push myself.

"I'm grateful to Shrewsbury because they have done their best for me to help my progression.

"I was blown away when I heard how much Everton were going to pay for me, I just couldn't believe it," he added.

"But the price tag won't affect me. I won't let it bother me and I'll just concentrate on getting better.

"I don't want to be the next Joe Hart or anything like that - I'm the next Mason Springthorpe!"

Shrewsbury Town today issued a statement confirming the transfer of Springthorpe's registration to Everton.

He will join on Academy terms until he turns 17 in November and can sign professional forms.

The statement added: "A compensation package has been negotiated between the two clubs which will enable Mason to join the Premiership club with immediate effect.

"Whilst our youth policy is to produce players for our first team it was felt that we could not stand in this young player's way when an opportunity such as this arose.

"The chairman, manager and Head of Youth David Hughes met with Everton manager David Moyes, the club secretary, David Harrison, and representatives of Everton's Academy in order to negotiate the settlement.

"We thank Everton for the way the business was conducted and we wish Mason the very best luck."
