He hit the right note on his return to the Shrewsbury Town starting line-up against Cheltenham – now Terry Gornell is trying to do the same off the pitch as well.

The former Accrington Stanley striker was on hand to slot home what will prove one of the simplest goals of his career after being recalled for Tuesday's top-of-the-table Greenhous Meadow clash.

As well as handing the frontman the welcome fillip of a first goal since the end of January, it also kept Shrewsbury firmly in the League Two automatic promotion race head of tomorrow's trip to Morecambe.

The pressure is cranking up a notch with every passing week, but Gornell is finding a musical distraction away from the pitch.

"I'm trying to learn to play the guitar," said the 22-year-old.

"It's the first time I've been away from home on my own and I needed something to do so I bought a guitar.

"I'm into my music and bands so it's something I've always thought about doing.

"I had more time this year living on my own so I thought why not?

"I'm still trying and strumnming away but I'm not anything special.

"I thought about getting lessons but it's a self-taught job and a bit of fun to take my mind off things.

"I will keep trying. I will get a bit more time to play in the summer and hopefully I will be able to play a song by next season."

By then, Gornell will be hoping he is part of a Shrewsbury team plying their trade in League One.

An agonising play-off semi-final defeat with Accrington last season has only served to further strengthen his resolve to be celebrating with Town this time around.

And he admitted being involved in two major promotion pushes in as many seasons will stand him in good stead for the future.

"Last season I was involved in trying to get promotion and this is the same," he added.

"You don't think about it at the time but in years to come it will be great experience. It's great going into games with something on it and playing big games like against Cheltenham on Tuesday.

"You don't want to be in mid-table and safe. This is what you play football for – the pressure and the big occasion."

Shrewsbury head to the Globe Arena aiming to right the wrongs of last week's deflating 1-0 defeat at Plymouth, a ninth League reverse on their travels this team.

"We have sometimes been disappointing away from home this season," he added.

"But we have to look forward and, in the position we are in, we should be full of confidence we can go anywhere and get a result.

"From now until the end of the season it doesn't matter whether we are home or away, it's nine cup finals."
