Darren Jones was today adjusting to life at Shrewsbury Town as Graham Turner moved to fill one of his defensive voids.
A deal for the 28-year-old, who rejected a contract to remain at Aldershot, has been in the offing for the last two weeks and has now been confirmed by the newly-promoted club.
Jones began his career with Bristol City before spending time in non-League with Forest Green Rovers and Newport County.
He worked under Town's management team of Graham Turner and John Trewick at Hereford in 2009-10 before moving on to Aldershot, where he became club captain.
"Darren's very strong and aggressive and has enough mobility and pace about him to deal with strikers in League One," said Turner.
"Whenever I saw him play last year, he put in good performances and he swept the board at the Aldershot Player of the Year honours.
"By the sounds of it, everyone appreciated the work he put into Aldershot.
"Having lost Ian Sharps and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, we are delighted to bring Darren in and I think he will do a good job for us."
Jones will be stepping up to a new level with the chance to play in the third tier of English football.
But Turner has no doubts that he can make the step up.
"Darren's a very good competitor and he will cope with League One strikers, I'm convinced of that," added the Town boss.
"Since he left Hereford, he's had two very good seasons at Aldershot and has progressed further.
"He had a spell in the League as a youngster, drifted into non-League and he has come again.
"At 28, and particularly being a defender, there is certainly scope for further improvement.
"One or two other clubs were interested who he spoke to, but he came to have a look around and appreciated what we had got here."
Turner is still likely to be chasing at least one more defender after former captain Sharps and Cansdell-Sherriff moved on to Rotherham and Preston North End respectively after rejecting new deals at Town.
