There were seven minutes remaining when a chant emerged from the away faithful which proved music to the ears of all connected with Shrewsbury Town.

"One shot, we've only had one shot," bemoaned 493 Leicester City fans as the clock ticked down on a fully merited success for Graham Turner's side at the Greenhous Meadow, writes James Garrison.

Results may count for little at this stage of the year but victory over a side who will expect to knock on the door of Premier League riches next season will provide a timely confidence boost for the League One rigours ahead.

Goals in either half from Terry Gornell and Marvin Morgan were just reward for passages of easy-on-the-eye possession football from Shrewsbury on a day when no less than 19 players were used by the hosts.

But Turner would arguably have derived just as much satisfaction from the action at the other end of the pitch.

The Town boss admitted to mild concern at the openness of his backline during the 2-1 defeat to Birmingham last Tuesday.

But three days of graft on the training pitch clearly addressed those issues with Leicester's only genuine moments of encouragement arriving in short bursts at the start of each half.

Gornell was to break the deadlock on 21 minutes, Town's patient build-up rewarded when the ball reached the former Accrington frontman on the edge of the box before a neat turn, swivel and left-foot shot saw the ball dispatched past Kasper Schmeichel as it nestled in the bottom corner.

Asa Hall, who fired just wide with two earlier efforts, then saw a shot cleared off the line by Ritchie De Laet before Leicester posed a brief danger when Lloyd Dyer forced a save from Joe Anyon after a poor throw out from the Town goalkeeper, who also denied Jeff Schlupp just after the break.

But the Foxes' threat evaporated in the 58th minute when substitute Morgan scored his second header of the week against Championship opposition as he diverted an off-target Rob Purdie shot into the net.

Shrewsbury could have extended their lead with Paul Parry only inches wide with a 25-yard free-kick, but the outcome had already been placed beyond doubt.

Turner will know only too well that victories from August 11 onwards is the only currency that matters.

But, with less than two weeks to go before the Capital One Cup trip to Leeds, Shrewsbury look bang on course for the big kick-off.
