Graham Turner took the first team to the military base to work on physical and mental tests. Shrewsbury are without a game this weekend after being knocked out of the FA Cup by local rivals Hereford in the first round.

Corporals Gareth Evans and Mike Davies, from the Physical Education Flight team, developed a number of exercises aimed at increasing teamwork, leadership and fitness.

The squad went on a six-mile run through local woods, during which they were ordered to pull a Land Rover for one mile.

After the physical challenges, the attention turned to the squad's mental state, as they were taken through a series of leadership exercises by the Gloucester Armed Force Careers Office Motivational Outreach team.

The visit to RAF Shawbury is part of Town's close links with the RAF.

The RAF first team play Inter Services fixtures at the Greenhous Meadow with the stadium becoming the home of the squad for the past two seasons.

Squadron Leader Neil Hope, from RAF Shawbury, said it was not just the players who got something out of the day.

"The full session had proved exceptional experience for our physical instructors and they have all really enjoyed working with the squad," he said.

"The whole station wishes Graham and his squad the very best for the rest of the season."

He added that the RAF squad would be back at the Greenhous Meadow next year, when they are due to take on the Royal Navy in a match on March 17.
