Paul Parry is Mr Versatile for Shrewsbury Town

Paul Parry was pressed into shouldering the weight of Shrewsbury's attack recently.

But Town's 'Mr Versatile' was in a more familiar role when he fired last Saturday's equaliser against Stevenage.

Now back out on the wing, he hopes he can get close to emulating his recent best 11-goal haul he managed for Cardiff during the 2007-08 Championship campaign.

Despite the arrivals of Chris Porter and Tom Eaves up top, the former Welsh international, 32, recognises the importance of spreading goals around a squad which has lacked a natural hitman this term.

So much so that he found himself deployed as a foil to Ryan Doble against Sheffield United earlier this month.

"It was probably a one-off as we'd had a few injuiries and goals were hard to come by," said Parry. "But I did my best when I was asked to play up there and I've played a few positions this season.

"You've got to have a bit of versatility within the squad and it's nice to have a few options for the manager. Different players can play different positions, so it's always a bonus."

As are his goals, which invariably catch the eye. Opening Town's goal account in style with a thunderous strike against former club Preston back in August, he was at it again.

He caught Matt Richards' drifting cross with the sweetest of connections and, with his his wrong foot, drew level with his skipper on six goals for the campaign.

"It was all right for a standing foot shot, they don't come along very often. They usually fly into the top of the stands, but it was nice to score a goal on my weaker foot," added Parry.

"I caught it well and it flew into the bottom corner. It was an important goal and a good time to get the equaliser as we hadn't started too well against Stevenage."

With substitute Marvin Morgan bagging a late winner, Salop are in better form than tonight's visitors, Doncaster, after registering three wins in their last four outings.

While they lie only a point behind leaders Sheffield United in fourth place, Rovers have so far failed to win in five games in February.

A sequence of three draws after two consecutive defeats has left Brian Flynn scratching his head following Dean Saunders' exit.

"Getting back-to-back wins will take us into the Doncaster game full of confidence. I don't think they are in the best of form, although they are a strong team and fancied to go up this season," said Parry.

"But Brian Flynn has taken over and they'll be looking to go up automatically, so it'll be a tough game for us."

Town's improvement has eased them to within 10 points of the magical 50-marker.

But Parry is insistent they should be aiming for more than just survival with only three wins separating them from next Saturday's hosts, Walsall, up in ninth spot.

"People always talk about 50 points, but we're in a good run of form so should be looking up the table rather than down.

"It's not been easy for the fans to watch us this season as we've been in and around the relegation zone for a while.

"But we've got a cushion now. And it's massively important we stay in this league and build the foundations to kick on at the start of next season."

And, on a personal note, Parry added: "My goal on Saturday will give me a bit of confidence to kick on myself too.

"You learn from things when they're not going so well for you.

"You take it on board and look to progress. My form dipped and I was out of the side. But I've scored six goals now, so hopefully I can get a couple of more between now and the end of the season."
