The imposing defender was in the Wycombe side suffering a swift demotion back to League Two at the end of the 2011-2012 campaign. But he admits he will relish the chance to test himself again against better forwards at the heart of the Salop back four.

"There isn't a footballer out there who doesn't want to improve and make leaps and bounds in their career," said Winfield, who turned down offers from several clubs – including Wycombe – to become Town's second signing of the summer.

"I want to play as high as I can and there are some massive clubs in this division like Sheffield United and Wolves."

Winfield, who signed off as captain of the Chairboys after a century of appearances in a three-year spell, added: "I met the gaffer a few weeks prior to signing and sometimes in football you get a good feeling about something. We got on very well and I'm very excited about this move. I'm at that stage now where I've had a break from it and I want to get back into the football."

While Winfield, 25, is currently Shrewsbury's only fit contracted centre-half, he could soon be joined by Darren Jones. For the Welshman has provided a close-season fillip by making swift progress recovering from shoulder surgery.

The initial prognosis for Jones, who suffered serious damage at Carlisle on Good Friday, was poor and he was not expected to fit for the August 3 kick-off.

But boss Graham Turner revealed: "It's been a rapid recovery and Darren has got a good chance of being ready for full training early in pre-season. He is due to come in and start working with our physio Chris Skitt. "He has worked really hard although he might not start the first few days of training."

Meanwhile, Town have announced that Surridge Sport will be the sponsors of their new kit along with the the Greenhous Meadow's West Stand.
