Bernard McNally backs Shrews over Wolves

Shrewsbury Town legend Bernard McNally believes his former club can relive former glories against fallen giants Wolves.

The Football League computer this week handed Town an early-season resumption of long-forgotten local hostilities with the Molineux men following their demotion to League One.

McNally hit the winner when the sides last met in a league encounter in Shropshire three decades ago.

And he suspects Wolves will be far from relishing their return on Saturday, September 21.

McNally said: "I would imagine that the game at the Meadow will be a sell-out with the expectations which will be on them after relegation.

"There will be a lot of pressure on them. But, knowing Graham Turner, it will be a game he will love being involved in.

"He was manager of Wolves when they had some great times and that will add extra spice to it. They will be massive games, playing Wolves again."

Salop savoured a double against their near-neighbours when they briefly shared time together in the old Second Division in 1984-85.

While Town were in the middle of a 10-year stint in the second tier Wolves, under Tommy Docherty, were just passing through.

They suffered three consecutive demotions from the top flight to the old Fourth Division from 1984-86.

McNally's late strike after a Colin Robinson opener clinched a 2-1 win for Salop in front of 9,183 at the Gay Meadow on Boxing Day 1984. They triumphed 1-0 in the return fixture the following April.

McNally, currently manager at Welsh Premier outfit Newtown, said: "They were huge games back then and doing the double over them was a fantastic achievement for us.

"But we did that sort of thing very often during that 10-year period. If big teams came and took Shrewsbury lightly then they were likely to come unstuck.

"We had a great camaraderie in our side."
