Double injury blow for Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury Town today ruled out striker Akwasi Asante for another week – and defender Dave Winfield could be sidelined for up to a month.
Asante has been out for two weeks after tearing his hamstring in the pre-season game at home to Bolton and will miss tomorrow night's rematch in the first round of the Capital One Cup. Town boss Graham Turner had hoped the Birmingham City loanee would be fit for Saturday's League One trip to Leyton Orient, but now feels that would be unrealistic.
And centre-half Winfield will be missing for weeks after straining his hamstring in training last week, forcing him out of Saturday's goalless opening day draw at home to Milton Keynes Dons.
Darren Jones stepped in to partner captain Tamika Mkandawire before going off for Connor Goldson with six minutes to go. Both will now jostle for the vacant starting place.
Turner said: "Akwasi is making good progress and I was hoping he may be fit for this coming weekend, but now it looks like he's going to be a few days more.
"We are just being careful, really, and making sure there's less of a chance his hamstring will tear again.
"Dave will be out for some time yet, maybe three to four weeks."
Turner welcomes Championship promotion contenders Bolton to the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow with a number of former Premier League players still in their squad.
The Town boss watched Bolton's 1-1 draw at Burnley on Saturday before his side played.
And Turner hinted that Bolton may send a weakened side with promotion the visitors' main priority.
He said: "It depends on what side they bring here, I think there are some thoughts some of their younger players might get a game.
"We had the opportunity to watch their game on Sky before we played on Saturday and I know they had someone here watching us.
"It's a challenge for us. We are very much the underdogs, so we can go out in a more relaxed state than we did on Saturday. There's a fine dividing line between casual and composed on the ball, but we do need to show a bit composure."
