John Marsden tipped to fire in goals for Shrewsbury Town

Midfielder Jon Taylor is backing summer signing John Marsden to hit the goal trail for Shrewsbury Town this season following an exciting debut performance against MK Dons.

Marsden, who made his Football League debut in Saturday's 0-0 draw at the Greenhous Meadow, twice went close to a goal in Town's League One curtain-raiser.

And Taylor, who has known Marsden since the two were in the youth ranks at Wigan Athletic, is convinced the 19-year old will be a success in the English third tier.

He said: "I have played with John since I was a kid. He was at Wigan with me so I know how good he is.

"We were there for five years together so I know he will fit in well here and he will score goals because he is a natural goal scorer."

Marsden was one of three players in the starting XI who were making their competitive Town debuts on Saturday, along with defenders Tamika Mkandawire and James Tavernier, the latter on loan from Newcastle.

Taylor, who netted six times last season, said: "They have all been great.

"We all know they are good players and they fitted in very well."

"They are good lads to have around and I don't think they will have any problems this season. Tam has played at a higher level than League One and James is a Premier League player."

Regarding his own prospects for the season, Taylor is keen to repeat his goalscoring exploits from last season.

But he will not be putting any undue pressure on himself to match his six-goal haul, which equalled the best of his career.

He said: "I'll just see what happens. I want to score in every game but I won't get annoyed if I don't score."

Another goalscoring prospect to don the blue and amber at the weekend was forward Kaiman Anderson.

The Town first-year scholar was named on the bench alongside second-year youngster Dom Smith, although neither got on.

But he tweeted after the game: "Absolute class day! Great experience," regarding his inclusion.

Manager Graham Turner said: "He has got a lot of potential."
