Ryan Woods happy to return to Shrewsbury Town midfield
Shrewsbury Town's Ryan Woods today admitted he's pleased to be back in his favoured midfield position after switching from right-back.
Woods took advantage of a gap in the right-back position to break into the first-team and get an extended run of games under his belt.
But the second coming of Cameron Gayle, on loan from Premier League side West Brom, has allowed the 20-year-old to move into the middle of the park.
He's likely to again partner Luke Summerfield in Town's League One game at Crewe tomorrow and Woods feels it's where he belongs.
He said: "Just playing is the main thing but, obviously, midfield is my natural position and I want to keep pushing to play in there.
"Fingers crossed, I will keep pushing to play in there. I have just got to keep doing what I am doing and improving and you never know what will happen."
Woods reckons he's more aware of his surroundings in the centre of the pitch, having watched the game come to him when playing in defence.
He said: "Obviously, it's a lot different to being a right-back because you have got everything in front of you there.
"In midfield, you are checking over your shoulders all the time, you have got to know what is around you.
"But I am getting back into it now, so I have just got to keep training well in my position and learning everyday."
Town won't get a better chance of getting on the scoresheet with the fact Crewe have conceded more goals than any other team in League One.
The Railwaymen's struggles owe much to a poor defensive record which has seen them concede no fewer than 42 goals in their 20 league games. Town, in contrast, have conceded 23 goals from the same number of matches.
