Aaron Wildig calls for winning mentality as Shrewsbury Town prepare for League Two
Shrewsbury midfielder Aaron Wildig says the club needs to re-instil a 'winning mentality' after relegation from League One was confirmed at the weekend.
And Wildig, who was part of the Town team that won promotion from League Two in 2012, added that he was 'open' to helping lead the fightback.
The former Cardiff City player, who is one of several Town players who are out of contract at the end of the season, said: "When you get relegated you have got to change a lot of things at the football club and a winning mentality is one of them.
"You have got to go and get that back because as players and a club that's a massive thing in football.
"You have got learn how to win games and you saw on Saturday when we were 1-0 up we didn't see it through.
"You have got to know how to control and manage a game and that will be massive next season because there won't be a lot between all the sides."
Town have won just nine of 45 games so far this season, losing 22 and drawing 14.
In that time they have failed to put back-to-back wins together and have lost crucial matches against fellow strugglers including games against Colchester United, Tranmere Rovers and Crewe Alexandra in the last two months.
And Wildig said both had contributed to their downfall. He said: "We haven't put back-to-back wins together all season. We have been saying that as a team and individuals all season to each other.
"We have won nine games all season, which is always going to tell come the end of the season so I don't think this has crept up on us.
"But we have had big games in the last three of four months where we have been saying 'we have got to win' and we've slipped up."
Asked if he wanted to be part of the squad charged with leading the response to relegation next season, he added: "It's a great football club.
"If there is something there for me I would definitely consider it."
