Revenue pledge by Shrewsbury Town chief executive Matt Williams
Shrewsbury Town's new chief executive Matt Williams is determined to drive up revenue at the club, as finance experts Deloitte revealed income at Premier League outfits hit a record £2.52bn in 2012/13.
The 23rd annual review of football finance from Deloitte said the Premier League's global appeal has continued to drive commercial revenue growth, particularly at the biggest clubs.
The company also confirmed that Shrewsbury's revenue stood at just over £3.8m for the same season, which represented a drop of just over one per cent on the previous campaign.
But following Town's relegation to League Two last season, the club pledged a root and branch review.
And Williams says that increasing revenue streams will be one of his priorities.
He said: "I am in the process of reviewing all aspects of the business and trying to make it more proactive, more cost-efficient.
"We need to be more than a venue 23 times a year. This place needs to be in use 365 days a year if we can get it that way.
"One of my key focuses is on increasing our revenue streams and I will be tasking all areas of the business to try to develop the revenue streams that are available to them.
"We do an awful lot of good stuff which we need to fine-tune, make better and do more.
"The facilities here are conducive for more than just football. We need to do more with the community and more commercially."
Deloitte's report stated that in total, the revenue of the top 92 clubs in English football reached almost £3.2bn. But it reported that the 2012/13 season was a particularly bleak year for the finances of Championship clubs.
A revenue reduction of £39m was compounded by a £40m increase in wages, leading to record operating losses of £241m.
Pre-tax losses also increased by £170m, equivalent to an additional £7m per club, to £323m.
