Micky Mellon adds two further additions to Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon has hailed the versatility of new signing Scott Vernon – as fellow new recruit James Caton vowed to be a flexible friend.

Mellon made his ninth and tenth signings in just over a month yesterday in striker Vernon from Aberdeen and ex-Blackpool winger Caton.

Both have joined on two year deals, with the Vernon deal including another year's option.

Asked what qualities Vernon, 30, would bring to his attack, Mellon said: "Scott is a very clever striker, he's got great experience and I am absolutely delighted to get him on board.

"He's another exciting addition to the squad, he makes good runs, he's got good movement and he will fit in perfectly with what I want to do.

"He has got variations to the way he can play up front. He can drop off and be a No 10 or he can be right up front and play in a front two or up front on his own, so he gives us loads of different strings to our bow.

"And he can play with another front-man, so I am really pleased to get him on board. He is definitely the type of person we want."

Vernon is the second forward Mellon has added since he took over, also bringing former Town hitman James Collins back to the club from Hibernian.

Mellon hopes out-of-contract striker Tom Bradshaw will add to that number in the coming weeks, having been offered a new deal at the end of last season.

He's also in the market for wide players and he bolstered that area with the capture of Caton, just a few hours after Vernon's arrival was confirmed yesterday.

And the 20-year-old, who started his career as a youth player at Bolton Wanderers, is also able to fulfil a number of roles in the team.

He said: "I can play on both sides but I'm not just going to say I'm a winger.

"I can play the No 10 role, but it's really about where the manager sees me having a role in the team."
