Matt Williams wants to get Town buzzing

Chief executive Matt Williams today vowed Shrewsbury Town will not be 'standing still' in their quest to improve.

The Town supremo believes the club have been guilty of failing to promote themselves in the past.

Williams joined Town in May and wants to put them at the heart of the community, insisting there will be no let-up under him.

He said: "We have been guilty of almost standing still after moving to the new stadium. I have been here two months and that's my impression.

"The chairman is a fantastic guy and he deserves a successful football club. At the moment he hasn't got one which is a big shame.

"He wants to see the club in the news for doing the right things, not being this isolated best-kept secret we have been in the past."

Shrewsbury start their League Two campaign at AFC Wimbledon next Saturday fourth favourites for promotion after relegation last season.

The season took its toll on the club, especially chairman Roland Wycherley, after demotion and the exit of legendary manager Graham Turner in January.

And Williams wants success for Wycherley after his efforts to try to rouse the staff this summer.

"When I first came in it was the chairman who was hurting more than anyone else following relegation," he said. "He was rallying round the staff trying to put smiles back on their faces.

"I've come in trying to change the mindset which is difficult with anything new. I want all the departments pulling in the same direction, but most of all I want to put a smile back on the chairman's face."

And Williams reiterated the desire for an immediate return to League One.

He added: "The short-term ambition and target is to get out of League Two. A club of this size, infrastructure and supporter base shouldn't be in League Two."
