Blog: History in the making for Shrewsbury
Since the start of Shrewsbury Town's season, I have preached cautious optimism and tried to refrain from the use of hyperbole, writes blogger Liam Hoofe.
Despite our inspired late comeback against Tranmere, our demolition of Accrington Stanley and our impressive display away at Northampton, I have tried to keep my feet on the ground.
But, after Tuesday night all I can say is, what an absolutely amazing result and performance in the Capital One Cup.
Last week, we had no pressure going into the Leicester game and thought our fans could just enjoy a visit to a Premier League stadium, but we didn't foresee just how much we would enjoy it.
For the first time in our history, we walked away from a Premier League ground as the winning side, quite the achievement for Micky Mellon and his men.
This was no smash-and-grab victory, either, we rolled Leicester over and the score-line flattered them, if anything.
Scott Vernon and James Collins both hit the post, while Ben Hamer was arguably Man of the Match for the opposition in goal.
A stand-out moment came at the final whistle when the fans, who had been fantastic for the duration of the game, were singing 'one Micky Mellon.'
The manager responded with applause but then stopped and pointed at the players, signifying that the achievement wasn't necessarily his, but the lads who had done the hard work on the pitch.
This kind of unity has been severely lacking at the club over the last few years and Mellon has managed to inject a new sense of belief amongst both the fans and the players.
Gathered around our TV sets Wednesday night, many fans would have been disappointed with the draw of Norwich at home, with many hoping for an away trip to the likes of Liverpool or Man City.
Norwich will present an interesting challenge, though, and despite being an anti-climatic tie, the game is very winnable and progressing further in the competition can only be a good thing.
