Blog: Badge of honour for Shrewsbury Town

Wednesday night saw a huge result for Shrewsbury Town fans in the battle for the return of the Loggerheads badge, writes blogger Liam Hoofe.

Since the unveiling of the new badge in 2007, fans have been protesting for the return of our iconic loggerheads badge.

The new badge, affectionately named Clippy by Town fans said goodbye to the three loggerheads synonymous with the clu.

It replaced them with a lion that some fans have suggested could well have been picked straight from a clip art collection.

The change in badge was all part of the clubs rebranding as we said goodbye to the Gay Meadow and hello to the Greenhous Meadow.

For many fans, however, the changing of the badge was a step to far and the 'Bring Back the Loggerheads' group was set up.

In the last five years, it has been impossible to visit an away ground and not spot a sticker with the statement on slapped up somewhere by a Town fan.

The fans have clearly made their feeling known, with a banner in the ground display the Loggerheads on whilst proudly stating 'This Badge is Our Badge.'

After seven years, the club have finally taken steps to restoring the Loggerheads and this week the results of a poll come out with a landslide victory in favour of changing the badge.

Speaking to a younger fan last week, they didn't seem to understand what all the commotion was about.

The idea that there is a generation of Town fans coming through who have become affiliated with the clubs current badge is worrying indeed.

A club's badge is a huge part of its identity, it is what we proudly display when we travel to away games and it carries with it years of history.

The Loggerheads is an important and essential part of our history and its time for the club to recognise that.

With the results now in, the ball is now back in the club's court but this is certainly a step in the right direction.
