Shrewsbury Town in confident mood ahead of Preston, says Micky Mellon
Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon says confidence within the camp is sky-high ahead of their FA Cup trip to higher-league Preston North End on Saturday.
Town, who are currently third in League Two, have already tasted defeat at the hands of the Lilywhites, who knocked them out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 1-0 home win earlier this season.
Simon Grayson's League One promotion hopefuls, who sit 24 places higher than Town in the football pyramid, will be confident of repeating that feat in the FA Cup.
But the visitors will go into the fixture in great form, having won eight and drawn one of their last 11 matches in all competitions.
Mellon insisted there would be absolutely no fear among his troops for their return to Deepdale for the second-round cup-tie.
"We will go up there to try and beat them. First and foremost we will try and win the game," he said.
"We won't be going up there to stay in it or damage limitation. We think we are good enough to go up there and beat them.
"We will have a massive support and we will be roared on by them.
"With the confidence in my players, they back each other to win every game. Then it is in the hands of the gods who we get in the next round.
"We know it will be a tough game for Preston because we will go up there and enjoy it."
Preston's JPT victory over Shrewsbury on September 2 was Mellon's first competitive defeat as Town boss following his arrival in the summer. Jordan Hughill's 59th-minute finish settled a close first-round tie.
Town had previously won five and drawn two of their opening matches, including two big Capital One Cup victories over Championship side Blackpool and Premier League Leicester City.
