The former Fleetwood boss has been a revelation since joining in the summer as he looks to mastermind an instant return to League One.

And the Town boss has lifted the lid on some of the techniques he uses after revealing he monitors players through Key Performance Indicators.

"There is an awful lot of work that goes into it – every player's performance is counted for with a KPI," Mellon said.

"In football you can never guarantee yourself a win but you can give yourself more of a chance by doing certain things.

"We have worked out what that is to us, we know the percentages we have to hit to give us a better chance in each game.

"We look at that on Monday and if we have won we will know why we have won and if we have got beat we will know why we have got beat or whether it's just been random.

"We will know if we have lost because of an individual error or a moment of magic because the figures in all the other areas will be high.

"We lost at Plymouth and we had a midfielder (James Wesolowski) who had 100 per cent pass completion, he never gave the ball away in 90 minutes. To have a go at him would have been pretty tough."

Mellon and his staff look at figures for individual players and for the team as a whole so they know where they need to improve.

"Each player will ask for their percentage data so they know exactly what they have done and what they haven't done," Mellon said.

"Players love numbers. They get given clips for their stats but the team figures are put on the wall and every Monday they come in like schoolboys to look at it."
