Micky Mellon: Support is key to success

Boss Micky Mellon has reiterated his plea for Shrewsbury supporters to back their team as they continue their pursuit of the League Two title.

Despite sitting second in the table, Town's players were given a hard time from their own fans during Saturday's 2-0 win over Oxford.

Salop supporters became restless as Shrewsbury withstood heavy pressure from Michael Appleton's side, while goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler was also jeered for his kicking.

The negative reaction follows the decision of some supporters to boo the team at half-time during the 1-0 loss to title rivals Wycombe earlier this month.

"We need our fans, we really need them – but we don't need them against us," Mellon said.

"We need them working with us and working for us at this time of year.

"They have an absolutely massive part to play in the run-in, make no mistake about that.

"I say to the fans, please trust us and roar us on because you can give us that extra bit of energy.

"Everyone is responsible, the players, myself, the fans, to keep pulling in the same direction. Roar us on because it is important."

Mellon believes with so much at stake at this stage of the season, fans can't always expect attacking, free-flowing football.

"At this stage of the season every game is really difficult because everyone still has something to fight for.

"There are no teams thinking they are safe or thinking they can't make the play-offs.

"Games will get more scruffy with so much to play for. Make no mistake I have seen this all before and it is no surprise to me to see games go the way there are going now.

"The important thing is that we stick together, keep getting clean sheets and keep winning."
