Town's 1-0 win at Cheltenham saw the Shrews reach a club record 89 points and seal an historic promotion back to League One.

Mellon's side can now lift the championship crown if they beat Plymouth at Greenhous Meadow on Saturday and Burton fail to win at Cambridge.

And the Shrews boss insisted his charges are ready to end the campaign with silverware, saying: "Let's win the title – let's go for it.

"We can go into this fantastic home game and give it our absolute best shot to try and win this league.

"It's a game to nothing now. We can give it everything we have got now we have this fantastic promotion under our belts.

"It's important we give it the best we can to win that silver pot for the fantastic supporters of Shrewsbury Town."

Town's success marks a huge turnaround for the club following the bitter disappointment of last season's relegation.

And the instant return to League One, left the Town chief elated for everyone connected with the club.

He said: "Since day one, pre-season, the lads have always had the mindset to help this club bounce back and we are absolutely delighted to have been able to do that.

"It's going to take some time for it all to settle in. I do feel numb. It's amazing and I'm so pleased for the fans.

"The challenge of getting out of this league is incredibly, incredibly difficult.

"There are so many smart managers and you come up against different challenges every week.

"For my players to overcome that and finally cross that line is fantastic. These are the moments you get into football for."

Throughout the season, he has refused to divulge any targets. But after sealing promotion, Mellon revealed getting Town straight back to League One was always in his sights.

He said: "It's very easy for me to say 'I wanted to win promotion' now. When I arrived back in May, I never came to do anything else other than be very successful.

"I knew the type of player and type of man I could recruit and I had a feeling we would be able to compete and win promotion.

"But I have had tremendous support from the club and the fans. The whole of Shrewsbury has fought back from a really disappointing season."

The 43-year-old Scot, who is on a one-year rolling deal at Greenhous Meadow, was even more determined to bring success to Shrewsbury after seeing just how much the club means to its fans.

He said: "The fans have been brilliant, from the moment I walked through the door.

"I was absolutely determined we were going to get over that line for them. I was never going to let those guys down."
