Shaun Whalley can be Town's flexible friend
Shrewsbury Town today insisted impending arrival Shaun Whalley can give the team a new dimension in League One.
The freed Luton winger seems set to be unveiled imminently as Town's fourth summer signing pending medical results, after agreeing a two-year deal at Greenhous Meadow.
Social media reaction has been cool to the proposed capture of the former AFC Telford United loanee, who saw charges against him dropped over an alleged assault on a taxi driver.
Chief executive Matt Williams reckons the 27-year-old wide man will help boss Micky Mellon's team become more flexible at the higher level.
Williams said: "He's someone Micky is aware of and he rates him. As a winger with real pace and some tricks, he offers us something we haven't got.
"We need to be more flexible with our formation in League One.
"At times last season in League Two when we played 3-5-2, we didn't have the flexibility to go to 4-3-3, 4-5-1 and 4-4-2, and we need that now.
"Yes, we'd all love to sign Cristiano Ronaldo but we have to trust the manager with what he's doing – and I must point out that the charges he was linked to have been dropped.
"He's desperate to impress. We want players that are determined and have that hunger and so the fact he's 27 doesn't matter."
Whalley has been dubbed 'the express train' for his ability to change gear to beat opponents.
Williams said: "When you look at League One, you need pace, particularly in the wide areas and up top.
"Shaun will add something different to the squad and give Micky the flexibility to switch systems."
Whalley will join new-boys Mat Sadler, Martin Woods and Abu Ogogo, with Mellon still looking to strengthen further.
