Town ready to buy after Chris Dagnall blow
Shrewsbury Town are set to sign a right-back as one of "two or three" more arrivals – after missing out on striker Chris Dagnall.
Boss Micky Mellon is set to unveil one of two defenders he has spoken to – but denied his target is Yeovil captain Joe Edwards or Colchester's Sean Clohessy.
"I still want to bring in two or three more but they won't be Cristiano Ronaldo or massive marquee signings," said Mellon, who spent several hours in a board meeting after returning to his desk yesterday.
"But they will be players who will do very well here.
"I'm hoping something will happen in the next couple of days on that.
"There's nothing in those (Edwards and Clohessy) but we're speaking to two right-backs. We're trying to improve in that area because we didn't have enough cover there last season."
Dagnall was at Barnsley when Mellon was assistant to David Flitcroft and also when the Shrewsbury boss was caretaker manager. But the 29-year-old has signed a lucrative deal with Indian Soccer League side Kerela Blasters.
"We spoke to him and we were close to making it happen," said Mellon. "But he's had a fantastic offer to go to India, so that one is not now going to happen.
"We'll see if he's available in January, but we'll continue to try to bring players into the group and then re-assess at different times.
"But we've got some really good strikers at the club at the minute, so we're happy with them. That said, if someone popped up who we believe would improve us then I'm sure we'd look at that."
Liverpool-born Dagnall scored 13 goals for Leyton Orient in League One last season and has 98 in 385 League appearances for Tranmere, Rochdale, Barnsley, Bradford, Coventry and Orient.
