Tootle arrived at Greenhous Meadow this summer from Crewe, penning a two-year deal.

But the 24-year-old defender, who was limited to 18 appearances last term, is working his way back from injury.

Tootle was involved against Market Drayton Town and Cardiff City before getting more than 70 minutes under his belt against Birmingham on Tuesday night.

And he insisted his pre-season was key after a number of months out, saying: "I don't know if a lot of the supporters know, but I haven't played a game for eight months.

"That was the first 70 minutes I've played in a long time. That's not making excuses, it's going to come in time. It's about the fitness and getting mentally right.

"I feel good though, the fitness was OK and that's exactly what pre-season is for. I'm building to where I want to be.

"I've been out for a long time and you get the odd few niggles, but it's just trying to stay as fit as I can and get the work done and once the games start I'll be ready come the eighth of August."

The full-back is relishing the opportunity to play competitively in front of the staff and support that have made him welcome.

He said: "Shrewsbury is great, the lads have been absolutely fantastic and I've really enjoyed coming into work.

"Straight away I've felt great and the whole set-up and atmosphere is great here."

On the back of tough run-outs with Cardiff City and Birmingham, the former Crewe man is keen to continue showing his strengths against prestige opposition.

He added: "Yes, they (big friendlies) are great, you want to test yourself against good opposition – it doesn't matter if it's a friendly."
