Video: Town sign trialist Sam Patterson
Shrewsbury Town have put some of the Connor Goldson cash to immediate good use by signing Sam Patterson.
The 21-year-old right-back, who has been on trial with Town for two months, has signed a one-year deal with a further 12-month option.
Goldson was sold to Brighton for £600,000-plus, and some of that fee has allowed former Barnsley reserve Patterson to become manager Micky Mellon's ninth summer signing.
He joins Mat Sadler, Martin Woods, Abu Ogogo, Matt Tootle, Darren McKnight, Shaun Whalley, Junior Brown and Liam McAlinden.
Patterson, who has been given the No 28 shirt, worked with Mellon at Oakwell.
He's played in pre-season friendlies against Cardiff, Birmingham and Kidderminster, plus Wednesday's behind-closed-doors game against Wigan.
And the full-back is looking forward to competing for a place now he has finally completed his move, after being without a club since May 2014.
He said: "Hopefully, I'll bring healthy competition. I'm a right-back and want to push myself as much as I can to get into that squad.
"(Matt) Tootle has done fantastic since he's been here and it's just that healthy competition now to keep us playing well.
"The coaching staff are brilliant here and are always giving me new ideas, extra training and telling me what they want. It's a great opportunity for me to progress in my career."
Patterson has forked out his own cash to stay in Shropshire for the last two months and is delighted to have settled his future.
He said: "I'm over the moon. It's been a long time for me out of football. To finally put pen to paper is a great day for me and my family, as well."
Mellon said: "It's great to get it sorted because I've known him for a long time, I know his character and he's paid out of his own pocket to be here.
"He's impressed us all. We're trying to mould people into Shrewsbury players and Sam's an exciting prospect."
Patterson settled in well – he knows several players from his time at Oakwell. He said: "Jordan Clark is a very good friend of mine and I came through the ranks at Barnsley with him.
"Liam Lawrence, Martin Woods and Darren McKnight were all there as well, so it was easier to gel with the squad."
