Dominic Smith thinks Town can kick on

Defender Dominic Smith believes Shrewsbury Town's comeback win can kickstart their season.

The 19-year-old centre-back made an impressive debut as Town came from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Colchester 4-2 on Saturday.

Victory ended a run of three straight defeats and four losses in five and catapulted Micky Mellon's side five places up the League One table to 14th.

And Smith reckons the team can aspire to better, after half-time substitutes Tyrone Barnett and Sullay Kaikai turned the game on its head.

Shrewsbury born-and-bred Smith said: "Getting four goals in half a game is remarkable and the goals were unbelievable.

"If we can keep that mentality going whereby we think we can get those goals, we can fly up this league as well.

"We can start reaching higher and higher, as long as we keep scoring those goals and keeping clean sheets.

"In the first-half we couldn't keep those two goals out but, in the second, we shut them out for the whole half and if we keep that mentality, we'll be fine."

Barnett halved the deficit within 37 seconds of coming on and Smith praised the former Peterborough forward's stunning impact.

The youngster said: "He's a big lad, he's a real handful and he's a good player with great feet.

"He showed on Saturday what a threat he can be with his two goals and you couldn't ask for better substitutions.

"They got the goals and that was what we needed. They did really well and, hopefully, they can carry on doing it.

"Being 2-0 down wasn't the best start to my debut, but the lads did really well in the second-half. We came out fighting and didn't give up and we deserved the win."
