Zak Whitbread has signed a contract with Town until the end of the season - but defensive cohort Anthony Gerrard has been released.

Whitbread played the final game of his short-term deal in last weekend's disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Barnsley.

The former Norwich and Derby stopper has now agreed fresh terms, though, after talks between his agent and Town chief executive Matt Williams for several days.

But Gerrard, cousin of Liverpool legend Steven, has left the club after his non-contract deal was cancelled by mutual consent. He had been playing for free since October.

The 29-year-old, who had been optimistic of staying at the Greenhous Meadow after making 15 appearances, is now free to find another club.

But Whitbread, who has played 11 times since joining in the same month, will be stopping for the rest of Town's League One campaign.
