Mickey Demetriou has a point to prove
Defender Mickey Demetriou insists he is good enough to be part of Shrewsbury Town's League One future – but admits the team comes first.
Demetriou made a surprise return in Saturday's loss at Millwall, his first game of the season with Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Zak Whitbread suspended and Junior Brown injured.
The 25-year-old, who is one of 17 players out of contract this summer, performed well.
And he wants to stay in boss Micky Mellon's plans as they seek the points to retain their League One place for next season.
The former Kidderminster Harriers left-back said: "The gaffer's got his plans but hopefully if I do well enough I'll get some games and I can be a part of that.
"I want to prove I can play at this level for him. If not, then it's football – you take the highs of last season and the lows of this season.
"I'm not going to dwell on it – I know I'm good enough to play, so hopefully the gaffer will give me that chance again."
Town now face back-to-back home games against third-placed Bradford and Sheffield United before trips to promotion-chasing Gillingham and Walsall.
Demetriou wants to play a part, but admits the team's results are more important than his own situation.
He added: "We've got six games left and, if I can play a part, that would be brilliant.
"But as long as the team plays well and we get the right results and stay in this league, that's the most important thing."
Town go into this weekend a point clear of the drop zone and Demetriou insists they are good enough to beat relegation.
He said: "We know we're good enough to do it, so we've got to prove it. We've played well for the first 60 minutes against Wigan and Millwall.
"But, when a team scores against us, we're not reacting well. We need to switch on, forget the goals and go again.
"We had a couple of chances to make it 2-1 and 2-2 but we know we're good enough to do it and, hopefully, we can go for the full 90 minutes this weekend."
