Goalkeeper Callum Burton insists he wants to stay and be part of Shrewsbury Town's future after admitting he couldn't be playing for a better team.

The 19-year-old Shrewsbury-born teenager made his debut in Sunday's 3-0 defeat at Swindon in the final game of the season.

Town academy graduate Burton is one of 17 players out of contract this summer and is hoping to win a new deal.

That's despite being linked with a host of clubs including Wolves, Aston Villa, Burnley and Rangers. Asked if he wants to stay, the former England Under-18 international said: "Of course.

"I've grown up watching the club, I've played for them and I couldn't wish to make my debut for a better team so I want to stay and play for the team as much as I can.

"I'm out of contract at the end of June so it's a case of waiting to see what happens.

"There are a lot of lads out of contract because a lot signed two years ago so we'll all have to see what happens to everyone."

Like Dominic Smith, Burton has been with Town since he was a schoolboy and admits his debut seemed like it was a long time coming.

He said: "It feels like I've been waiting a long time to get on the pitch, because I've been here since I was 10.

"I've been here for nine years – the last two as a pro working alongside Jayson (Leutwiler) and Mark (Halstead) and Shaun (Rowley) this year.

"I've taken a lot from the senior lads from working with them and seeing them play."

Burton admits it was a bitter-sweet occasion, adding: "We should have done better but it was a good experience and we'll take positives from the game.

"Nicky Ajose is one of the top scorers in the league, but I was happy with my performance."
