Dominic Smith: Wales could hold England
Shrewsbury Town defender Dominic Smith is backing Wales against England and reckons Chris Coleman's side can progress to the knockout stages of Euro 2016.
The 20-year-old Town academy graduate and Young Player of the Year is a proud Welshman, having represented his country at Under-19 and Under-21 level.
And he believes Wales, who top Group B after one game having beaten Slovakia 2-1 in their opener, can continue to impress as they prepare to face the Three Lions on Thursday afternoon in Lens.
He said: "I think we'll get through the group stages but it will be a good game against England.
"I'm rooting for Wales to win that one and I'd love that to happen, but more realistically, I think it will be a 1-1 draw. It's going to be intense and a good game to watch anyway."
Wales are playing in a major tournament for the first time since 1958, but Smith believes the quality of world stars such as Gareth Bale can ensure the years without playing at top tournaments won't affect the Principality.
Smith said: "We've got some world-class players and I think we can show the years we missed didn't have an effect and we can push to do our best. So it's something to look forward to – it should be brilliant."
Smith is a big admirer of Coleman's squad and wants to be pushing for a place in it as soon as possible.
Former Shrewsbury Town striker Tom Bradshaw has been capped by the full squad, but missed out on the trip to France after suffering a calf injury.
There is also the Town connection which sees one-time Salop academy graduates Joe Hart and Dave Edwards up against each other for England and Wales respectively.
Fellow Shrewsbury-born player Smith sees the progress made by Walsall hotshot Bradshaw as something he can emulate.
He said: "Definitely. You only have to look at Tom Bradshaw. I'm only 20 now, so I have plenty of years ahead of me.
"I want to make my mark with the Under-21s then. hopefully. push for the first-team."
Wales captain Ashley Williams is a player Smith shares parallels with. Both are centre-halves and both emerged after spells in non-league.
He "It's a good stepping stone to know I've got that person to look up to," he said. "He was from Tamworth where I played so I look at that too and see what can be achieved."
