The 18-year-old attacker has started twice for Salop's first-team this season after becoming the latest graduate of the Greenhous Meadow academy set-up.

Jones tasted League One football for the first time on the final day of last season at Swindon Town and got his full debut at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry earlier this season.

He also began in the Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Cambridge United after impressing in pre-season - where he scored the winner against Birmingham City.

Mellon said: "It's different to reserve team football and I'm sure he'll go and do really well, he has all the qualities that you want but he needs to get more experience and it'll be a win-win scenario for all concerned.

"He'll be playing at a real competitive level, feeling pressure and feeling that you have to try and get results at a big club like Tranmere and having to perform under the conditions.

"It's great for his development and it's important that you get that, because you don't get that in reserve football - you get other stuff but you don't get exposed to that expectation, crowd having a go at you or the adulation of you doing really well.

"It's so important that young lads like Ethan learn how to operate under those conditions."

The deal is a youth loan and originally for 28 days but the club hope Jones will remain at Prenton Park until January.
