Shrewsbury Town's next manager: Five names in the frame

With Shrewsbury Town still without a manager in place, Lewis Cox takes a look at five bosses currently being linked with the vacancy.

Published

Kenny Jackett

Former clubs: Southampton, Swansea, Millwall, Wolves

Current status: Out of work since July 2016

Positives: A high-profile candidate, Jackett is the sure-fire fans' favourite to be appointed. He would raise the club's profile, bring a boost to the gates and the appointment would certainly show ambition – given Jackett's second tier experience. Also has knowledge of the area having been at Wolves.

Negatives: Jackett's wage demands may prove too much for Salop. There are many that believe the ex-Wolves chief is still employable for a host of Championship clubs or a top League One outfit. He may be waiting for bigger and better.

Odds: 5/4 joint-fav

Steven Pressley

Steven Pressley has experience at a number of clubs and is one of the more passionate managers available.

Former clubs: Hearts (joint-caretaker), Falkirk, Coventry, Fleetwood

Current status: Out of work since July 2016

Positives: One of the game's most passionate managers. He was well thought of at Coventry in the beginning but had to operate under difficult constraints. Out of work and looking for a position, the Scot would be keen to talk to the Salop hierarchy over their vacancy.

Negatives: Believed there are aspects of the job he wants clarifying as Pressley is keen to wait until the right job is available. Did jump ship after just nine months at Fleetwood, when Salop want stability to help establish them in League One.

Odds: 25/1

Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards is highly thought of at Wolves.

Former clubs: None

Current status: First-team coach at Wolves, not been a manager.

Positives: Born in Madeley, Edwards has big Shropshire links and featured briefly on loan at Shrewsbury in 2013. Young and hungry to impress with new ideas, Edwards is seen as future management material at Molineux. Took charge of Wolves briefly in the summer amid takeover before Walter Zenga's arrival.

Negatives: Inexperience could be a factor, some clubs favour a tried and tested formula. At just 33, Edwards would be one of the youngest managers in the Football League. Wolves are also believed to be reluctant to let him leave Molineux .

Odds: 4/1

Jim Bentley

Jim Bentley is another name linked with Salop recently.

Former clubs: None

Current status: Manager of Morecambe.

Positives: Bentley is the fifth longest-serving boss in the Football League at five years, 151 days. Has a clear commitment to the cause and should see Shrewsbury as clear career progression. A similar style appointment to Micky Mellon after his time at Fleetwood. Bentley also had big links with Telford from his playing days.

Negatives: Supporters have claimed that Bentley would show a lack of ambition with just League Two experience under his belt. Morecambe struggled to 21st last term and the boss has a win ratio of just 32 per cent. His side sit 14th and have struggled at home.

Odds: 5/4 joint-fav

Dave Jones

Dave Jones has been out of management for over three years, but spells with Southampton, Cardiff and Stockport show his credentials.

Former clubs: Stockport, Southampton, Wolves, Cardiff, Sheffield Wednesday

Current status: Out of work since December 2013.

Positives: Brings with him a wealth of experience from higher levels. Jones is said to be keen to get back into work and lives in Bridgnorth, he has been spotted – like Jackett – at Greenhous Meadow this season. Known for playing a high-octane brand of football.

Negatives: Not been in work for almost three years. Only managed a year and a half at previous club Sheffield Wednesday – but did start off with an 18-match unbeaten run. Jones would not bring the fresh, new impetus of an Edwards-style appointment.

Odds: 25/1
