Shaun Whalley has pointed to his close relationship with the Shrewsbury Town faithful as a big factor in him wanting to remain with the club.

The winger moved to Greenhous Meadow from League Two Luton in 2015 and wasted little time in building a bond with the blue and amber crowd.

The 29-year-old's two-year Shrews deal is up this summer, alongside defender Mat Sadler, goalkeepers Mark Halstead and Shaun Rowley and youngsters Callum Grogan, Ethan Jones and Kaiman Anderson.

Whalley scored seven times in his debut campaign and has found the net three times this season in 34 appearances, also topping the assist charts with six.

"Yes, most definitely, I'd like to stay," said the No.7. "Everyone knows it, I've said it a load of times but I really mean it, I want to stay. It's a discussion for further down the line.

"My contract's up, I've not had chance to speak to the gaffer about it, it'll probably come at the end of the season on whether he wants to keep me or not.

"But that's down to him, there's nothing I can do apart from keep trying to play as well as I can and seeing what happens at the end of the season."

To date, only Abu Ogogo has signed renewed terms from the group boss Paul Hurst inherited.

Merseysider Whalley was one of the players Hurst was well aware of before taking the role, having faced the winger plenty of times while in charge of former side Grimsby.

And the ex-Southport flyer has come good for his boss recently, chalking up three assists in three games as Town edged towards all-but securing safety.

Whalley added: "I just love it, as soon as I came here it was like the fans took to me straight away.

"I didn't really play at the start and then I scored the winner at Crewe on my debut, scored the winner at Burton and a couple of late goals.

"They took to me straight away and I respond to stuff like that.

"I feel we've got a good friendship going on. I would like to stay."
