The 29-year-old’s contract has been set to expire at the end of next month but he has now committed his future to Town until the summer of 2019.

Signed by Micky Mellon from Luton Town in 2015, Whalley was one of the club’s standout performers during the second half of the season as they escaped relegation from League One under Paul Hurst.

A delighted Whalley said: “I’m made up to sign a new deal. I made it quite clear I wanted to stay for a long time now. I am delighted we have got it sorted.

“I wasn’t interested in leaving to go anywhere else. As soon as we started talking about a new deal it got done pretty quickly. I love Shrewsbury as a town and I love the club.

“I’m hoping we aren’t fighting relegation like we have been the last two seasons and can push up the table.

“I wanted to stay. The manager wanted me to stay. It was simple to get sorted.”

Hurst added: “Shaun has done well since I came to the club. I like my wingers. Shaun in many ways is a bit of a throwback in the way he likes to play the game.

“I take that in a positive sense. He has arguably been our most creative player since I arrived and I wanted to keep him.

“I think Shaun appreciates the faith I have put in him and the fact he has played a lot of games. I think he will be an asset for us.”
