Mellon, who left Town mired in the relegation zone when he switched to Prenton Park in October last year, saw his hopes destroyed as a Kaiyne Woolery brace saw Forest Green into the Football League for the first time in their history.

Mellon said after the defeat: “We’re really disappointed.

“We’re all gutted for the fans who have all travelled so far and paid so much money. We just felt that on the day, the better side won, there was no doubt about that.”

And Mellon added: “I have to digest things at the moment, things are pretty raw. I’m disappointed that we never gave ourselves a chance with some of the poor goals that we gave away but we dust ourselves down and carry on.”
