History beckons for Paul Hurst’s Shrewsbury Town

Paul Hurst has urged his players to prove people wrong as Shrewsbury look to make history at Oxford tomorrow.

Town can make it four victories from the opening four league games of a season for the first time in their Football League history with a win.

New signings, defender Omar Beckles and loan midfield man Ben Godfrey, are expected to make the squad at the Kassam Stadium, with Hurst insisting his incomings for this summer are complete.

But while his side can write themselves into the record books, proving wrong the tipsters who had them down for relegation is all the motivation the boss needs.

“There’s no pressure, then?” smiled Hurst at the mention of creating history.

“It would be some achievement. I said it last week and I’ll say it again, I think it’s the biggest challenge yet against a quite-fancied team.

“We can’t go there with any more wins than we’ve got. It would be fantastic if we could make a bit of history.

“But whatever happens, as long as the players put a shift in and give everything for the shirt I’ll be relatively happy.”

Wins against Northampton Town, AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale have Town bashing the bookies’ relegation odds. The club have only won their opening three games on two other occasions.

“I think in some ways my message is more about proving people wrong,” the boss added.

“Maybe it’s a bit selfish because it’s what motivates me a lot. I want my team to have a bit of fight and prove the doubters wrong.

“If you lose the first some people would think you’ll lose the second and third. But overall, I have to say, the general feel around the town and the ground has been excellent.”

Former Town goalkeeper Alan Boswell has passed away at the age of 74.

Boswell played for the club more than 220 times during his stay at Gay Meadow from 1963 and 1968. He also had spells at Wolves, Bolton and Walsall.
