The flying winger praised Hurst's summer business, of which 14 new players have arrived at Montgomery Waters Meadow, after Town's exciting start to League One, where they sit third with 10 points.

Whalley was busy in Saturday's impressive draw at Oxford, where boss Hurst was incensed as his side were not awarded a first-half penalty for a barge on the crowd favourite.

The ex-Luton man, who recently turned 30, signed a new two-year Shrewsbury deal in the summer and Hurst's ambition was crucial in that.

"The gaffer deserves all of the credit in the world, it was a big reason why I stayed in the summer, I only had to talk to him and I know how ambitious he is," said Whalley.

"I know how well he wants to do with the team. Every player he's brought in so far has been outstanding, that's great for the gaffer, great for us on the pitch and great for the fans. It's only good things at the minute."

Hurst's latest recruit, midfielder Ben Godfrey on-loan from Norwich City, put in a man-of-the-match display on his debut at the Kassam Stadium.

Whalley was impressed, adding: "He was really good, he broke up the play well, kept hold of possession for us and got us control of the game.

"I don't know how many times he's played competitively this season but he was fit as a fiddle, he was outstanding – a great debut."

Meanwhile, on-loan Wolves striker Niall Ennis has had 'bad news' from a scan following an injury he's been struggling with for a while, revealed Hurst. There was no word as to whether the injury would cut the 18-year-old's loan short.
