Unbeaten Shrewsbury Town have surged beyond everyone in the league so far this term on their way to opening up a five-point advantage.

And Hurst echoed a statement from his on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson after Town chalked up a seventh win from eight at Oldham last weekend.

One of the sternest tests of the season lays ahead as former Premier League champions Blackburn Rovers head to Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday.

When asked how he keeps his side’s feet on the ground after going clear at the top, Hurst said: “I’ll probably tell them that they can’t stay there, I want them to prove people wrong – that might be myself as well.

“I want them to enjoy winning games and have the will and desire to keep winning games.

“Deano said before the Oldham game ‘Don’t get bored of winning games’. That’s exactly it.

“I think I’ve done fairly well as a manager over the course of various clubs but trust me, those days when you drive home or spend a weekend after suffering a defeat, are not what you want.

“There’s an element of trying to enjoy what we’re achieving and for the players to maintain standards and work ethics as much as possible.

“Ultimately we’ll see where we end up.”

Hurst noted a change this season in his side claiming three points while not playing at their maximum levels across 90 minutes.

He added: “I think it’s a difference from last season.

“Then I felt we had to be as absolutely close to 100 per cent as possible to give us a chance in games.

“Now we’re a better side and it might not take quite as complete a performance.

“I still think we’ve got to be something near our best or have periods where we look a good side.”
