Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst named League One manager of the month
Paul Hurst paid tribute to his players and staff after winning a ‘special’ first Football League manager of the month award.
The Shrewsbury boss today landed the September prize after he guided his side to six wins from seven League One games.
The only dropped points were courtesy of an 84th-minute Blackburn equaliser. Town also beat well-fancied Wigan and Scunthorpe in a fruitful month.
“It’s my first award as a Football League manager but ultimately a lot of credit has to go to the players,” said the Town boss. “I picked up a few awards at Grimsby in the Conference, this one’s a little bit more special being in the Football League.
“The players are the ones that have got the results to put you in that position, and also all the staff that contribute and work extremely hard.
“They’ve helped us not only the last month but to a great start to the season.”
Hurst, whose side take an unbeaten four-point lead to rivals Walsall tomorrow, revealed his surprise that none of his players were recognised in the player of the month nominees. Portsmouth forward Brett Pitman won the award.
“I was a bit surprised,” he added.
“But if that means a few of them continue to go under the radar then I will be happy with that as well.
“I think we’ve surprised everyone, ourselves included.”
Hurst beat off competition from Paul Warne (Rotherham), Tony Mowbray (Blackburn) and Stuart McCall (Bradford).
