Salop's win against the Cod Army came at the eighth attempt, with Toto Nsiala heading home in the 89th minute to grab the three points.

Hurst's men remain top of League One and are one of two sides in English football yet to lose this season - the other being Manchester City.

"It was an exciting end, although a lot of the game was not the best spectacle - partly because of the conditions, partly because of the opposition," said Hurst.

"The team that was trying to win the game finally did in the end.

"At half-time, the message was to make sure we kept our focus, being patient.

"It was never going to be the prettiest of games but we had to make sure that we took something, even it if was 0-0."

Town brought on strikers Stefan Payne and Lenell John-Lewis towards the end to try to force the issue.

And while the winner did not come through them, Hurst insists that attacking mindset was key to getting the victory.

"We put on two strikers and changed formation to try to win the game and although it did not come directly from that, it paid dividends," he added.

"We were brave. The players just kept going. In a lot of ways, I enjoyed that win more than Tuesday's (4-0 thrashing of Bristol Rovers).

"It's nice - when you are up against a team that is taking an absolute age to take set pieces and throw-ins - to get that reward. It is a big, big win."
