Hurst has overseen a stellar start to the season at the Montgomery Waters Meadow with his side sitting top of League one.

Sky Sports presenter and Sunderland fan Tom White this morning posted on social media that 'sources' indicated that Hurst was interested in the post at the Stadium of Light – although a number of names have also been mentioned in relation to the post.

Hurst's spell at Shrewsbury has attracted huge attention after he saved them from relegation to League Two after joining 18 months ago from Grimsby Town.

And despite being the bookies' pre-season favourites for the drop, the 43-year-old has overseen a run which has brought 11 wins from Town's 16 games.

They currently have 37 points and sit a point ahead of early favourites Wigan.

Sunderland sacked boss Simon Grayson on Tuesday night just minutes after their 3-3 draw with Bolton.

They currently sit third-bottom of the Championship with 10 points from 15 games following relegation last season.

Hurst – who last week celebrated his first year in charge at Town – is due to attend a press conference this afternoon.
